God Knows I'm to Blame

The relaxed pose of Audrey in this work suggests passive guilt, the stage of grief that inspired this work. All too common, after a death, guilt played a heavy role. Too often, we all asked what any of us could have done differently, and many people even turned levels of guilt on themselves, myself included. This work expresses how easy it is to do that. The title is shared with a line from “Free Bird”, a favorite song of Steve’s. He referenced this song often in conversation and writing in the months following his death- the lyrics seemed to take a whole new understanding.
